Cool Hunting
San Francisco-based Michael Talbott and the Wolfkings's exceptional debut, "Freeze-Die-Come To Life," adeptly moves from pastoral melodies and harmonies to more intricate chamber-style orchestrations—all in the course of an album recorded by Wolfking members and friends of Talbott's, Scott Hirsch and MC Taylor of the Court and Spark. The result of a year in the studio, the finely-wrought instrumentation has a late-Beatles feel, incorporating an eclectic range of sounds, including cello, pump organ, banjo, harmonium, mellotron, pennywhistle, and pedal steel played by the 13-person group. Their record release party happens this Thursday, 27 April 2006 at Mighty in San Francisco. See the flyer and info after the jump.

The first proper full-length from Brooklyn's Polite Sleeper, Lake Effect serves up nine songs straddling the hazy line between folk and indie rock. At turns somber and frenetic, singer/guitarist Jason Orlovich's earnest vocal timber and everyday observations echo more recent Mountain Goats records. Rounded out by Michael Curtes (keys and vocals) and Tim Wilson (drums and vocals), the group shows remarkable range and versatility...
Two years since releasing the Handsbreath EP, the Bay Area folk group All My Pretty Ones return with their debut full-length, Tone Poems. A mix of brand new and previously recorded tracks, the record transcends the somewhat limiting "folk" classification seems limiting. While the disc's 11 songs are heavily based around traditional folk ingredients (acoustic guitar and vocal harmonies) the collective's eclectic musicianship shifts...

Other bands performing include Red Wire Black Wire, Renminbi, Sini Anderson, The Fancy and Beluga and we're stoked to be on board with co-sponsors Etsy (who...
Likely due to their home state, name and penchant for upbeat chord progressions, Florida's Holiday Shores draw comparisons to a slew of feel-good bands like Wavves, Beach Fossils and the Beach Boys, to name a few. But writing them off as surfer-dude tunes misses the mark. The band wisely tempers sunny melodies with a healthy dissonant sheen, such that each carefully-crafted pop melody comes...
