Cool Hunting
Puffy AmiYumi is playing tomorrow night, 11 July 2006, at the World Financial Center Plaza. Presently in the midst of celebrating the 10th year of their luminous career, the duo is so much more than a manufactured J-pop girl band. At this point they're more like a veritable pop culture institution; it's a very special treat to see them perform live.
Over the last decade Puffy AmyYumi has hosted their own weekly TV show in Japan, "Pa-Pa-Pa-Pa-Puffy,*" starred in the action-packed cartoon, "Hi Hi Puffy AmiYumi,” were featured as a float in the 2005 Macy’s Day Parade, and Mattel is making dolls in their likeness. And, of course, Puffy Amiyumi makes music, selling millions of records in Japan and collaborating with super foxy Jon Spencer of the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion on their upcoming album Splurge. Due out 25 July 2006, purchase it from Amazon.
*Sean “Puffy” Combs' prevents them from going by Puffy in the U.S.

Kids sporting laminates on NYC subways signals CMJ's descent on the city once again. Friends of CH, The Roulettes—a band accepted into the music showcase on their first try—put together an awesome lineup that we're sponsoring this Saturday. Other bands performing include Red Wire Black Wire, Renminbi, Sini Anderson, The Fancy and Beluga and we're stoked to be on board with co-sponsors Etsy (who...
Likely due to their home state, name and penchant for upbeat chord progressions, Florida's Holiday Shores draw comparisons to a slew of feel-good bands like Wavves, Beach Fossils and the Beach Boys, to name a few. But writing them off as surfer-dude tunes misses the mark. The band wisely tempers sunny melodies with a healthy dissonant sheen, such that each carefully-crafted pop melody comes...
This weekend Society HAE and Metro PCS co-host Harlem Pop: the Parlor Session, an extension of an ongoing series of "Pop Up Experience Shops." The project, geared towards art/fashion/music enthusiasts, consists of an installation that will house new works from emerging artists for one day only. Featured designers include Harriet's Alter Ego, The House of Nassat, Memory Lane by Toya, Enyawd Creations and more....
The first proper full-length from Brooklyn's Polite Sleeper, Lake Effect serves up nine songs straddling the hazy line between folk and indie rock. At turns somber and frenetic, singer/guitarist Jason Orlovich's earnest vocal timber and everyday observations echo more recent Mountain Goats records. Rounded out by Michael Curtes (keys and vocals) and Tim Wilson (drums and vocals), the group shows remarkable range and versatility...
Spaghetti Western rockers Spindrift are making their way west where their reverberated guitars hang on a minor chord like a magenta sunset over a high desert playa. Unique to this tour, they've been granted permission to use imagery from the reclusive J.X. Williams, whose all-but-lost horror spectaculars changed cinema forever. Director Noel L awrence, the keeper of William's archives, secured permission from the elder...
By Max Gold Showcasing music from near and far, Minneapolis's summer fete Rock The Garden features bands hand-picked by local radio station 89.3 The Current and takes place within the enormous Sculpture Garden at the Walker Art Center. Before the music started, we had a chance to talk to MPR host Mary Lucia as well as Philip Bither, the senior curator, about the state of...
