Cool Hunting
If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, Radiohead should be blushing. Close on the heels of BBE’s collection of future-soul-tinged Radiohead reworkings, comes Radiodread, a surprising and impressive roots-style reggae remake of the band’s entire landmark album OK Computer.
A tribute to the universal appeal of Radiohead’s songwriting, old-guard reggae luminaries Toots and the Maytals, Sugar Minott, Frankie Paul, The Meditations, Israel Vibrations, and Horace Andy take on a track each, with inspired results. And rising pop star Citizen Cope’s characteristic bluesy drawl works perfectly here over dubbing guitar skanks and deep mesmerizing bass lines. The album also features NYC natives Victor Axelrod aka Ticklah (best known as a longtime member of Brooklyn’s monster afrobeat orchestra Antibalas and frequent DJ Spinna collaborator) and acclaimed (and unsigned) singer/composer Tamar-kali—both names to watch.
These are not just saccharine lovers rock versions of Thom Yorke over the latest dancehall riddim (not that there’s anything wrong with that), but thorough reinterpretations and arrangements that transform OK Computer into reggae music without losing the essence of either, and enriching both in the process. Pick Radiodread up from Easy Star Records or iTunes.

It's impossible not to love at least one of Radiohead's melodramatic tunes, but for those who resonate with the music on a grander scale we have a handsome opportunity to fulfill your limited edition dreams. Radiohead's first three studio albums have been released by Capitol/EMI Records in expanded "collector's edition" packages. Pablo Honey (1993), The Bends (1995) and OK Computer (1997) will be available...
Back in March 2008, aniBoom, the online home of animation, teamed up with Radiohead's TBD Records for a contest inviting fans and animators to create a video for any of the songs from the band's wildly successful album, In Rainbows. From over 1,000 storyboard submissions, roughly 200 clips were produced and whittled down to 15 semi-finalists. Thom Yorke was quoted on w.a.s.t.e. saying, "......
Just when we thought they couldn't possibly fit any new music festivals into Barcelona's already beat-filled summers, we hear that the organizers of Summercase, Sinnamon Productions, will introduce Daydream, a new one-day festival. What's more, they secured Radiohead's only date in Spain this year. This is no mean feat since Radiohead's been getting serious about their envrionmental footprint and are loath to tour, restricting...
Last month I posted about Mark Ronson's excellent cover of Radiohead's Just, with Alex Greenwald of Phantom Planet on vocals. I've just seen the video and it is as good as, if not better than, the tune itself. Check out the updated post for details....
Cover versions that actually work are few and far between, but this one has been getting played in all the right places. It's a version of Radiohead's "Just" by NYC DJ Mark Ronson, and Phantom Planet singer Alex Greenwald, the man responsible for singing the theme song to The OC. While the first few bars are fairly unremarkable, it's when the horns and drums...
Kids sporting laminates on NYC subways signals CMJ's descent on the city once again. Friends of CH, The Roulettes—a band accepted into the music showcase on their first try—put together an awesome lineup that we're sponsoring this Saturday. Other bands performing include Red Wire Black Wire, Renminbi, Sini Anderson, The Fancy and Beluga and we're stoked to be on board with co-sponsors Etsy (who...
