Seven Dorm Room Solutions by Ami Kealoha

Munipillow

College may not be the most glamorous time in a young life, but dorm living doesn't have to be dreary. Often functioning as a mini-shared studio, dorm rooms pose a multi-use challenge, housing a make-shift kitchen, offices, and bedrooms, as well as storage and toiletries. Retailers and designers alike have caught on to the fact that students want well-designed, space-efficient products that are functional as well as stylish. The following Cool Hunting picks can out outfit your miniscule space without sacrificing aesthetics when square-footage is at a premium.

From Target's latest line of artist-designed products, these pillow cases are by Chocolate and Girl Skateboards designer Evan Hecox. Known for his paintings of San Francisco's Mission District and Chinatown, Hecox created this line of Muni-inspired bedding and accessories just in time for back to school.

Skram Wood Drop 14 Stool
It's a hunk of tree. Look closer. It's still a hunk of tree, but that's the point. The Wood Drop 14 stool by North Carolina-based Skram basks in all its imperfect glory, its naturally occurring cracks and flaws turned into valuable assets simply through their presentation. Skram's lead designer and owner Jacob Marks looked for these beauty marks, or "checks," in found, reclaimed or...
Andrea: Naturally Purified Air Filter
Andrea, a natural air purification system, looks like a futuristic prop in Steven Spielberg's A.I., not something you'll soon be able to purchase online for the cost of an iPod Touch. Created by industrial designer Mathieu Lehanneur and Harvard professor David Edwards in 2007, Andrea was one of several concepts by the designer to be featured in MoMA's critically-acclaimed exhibition, Design and the Elastic...
Design Night's "Nature" Planter
Portland-based husband and wife designers Dominic D'Andrea and Tram Pham have just launched their ceramic Nature planter. The unique design requires a six-part mold and seventeen cuts and is hand finished. There are eleven areas for planting and the largest one on the top is long enough for deep-rooting plants. The Nature planter (18" tall and 22" wide) comes in white, yellow and grey...
Sèvres Vase Clock
The Sèvres Vase Clock, a prototype by Georgios Maridakis, indicates the hour with an audible knock. Just place the vase of your choice on the brass and wood stand and the hammer will strike the vase each hour. Each vase makes a different sound, but adding different amounts of water for different pitches and notes takes it one step further. The modern take on...
