LED Calculator Watches: A Brief History by Watchismo

Before the Hamilton Pulsar (once thought to be the first calculator watch), a gift giving advertisement in the June 1975 issue of Playboy magazine included the Calcron LED Wrist Calculator (pictured left). One of the most collectible, only 50,000 of Hewlett Packard's 1977 HP-100 (pictured center) were made, of which about half were purchased by a Saudi prince. That same year, Sinclair introduced their DIY kit that didn't include a watch function (pictured right) and between 1976-78 Hughes Aircraft Company produced a similarly bulky piece that made appearances on Battlestar Gallactica. Since then, the 80's brought LCDs and every imaginable company produced LCD calculator watches. Go here for more details and images.

MB&F Horological Machine No.2
Maximilian Büsser, the mastermind behind the rule-breaking HM1, recently offered me the rare privilege to have first look in person at his new child, the Horological Machine No.2, before it went public. Since going public, it's been far and wide in the blogosphere, but I think it's too amazing to not put on CH. With four dials—Jumping Hours, Concentric Retrograde Minutes, Retrograde Date and...

The props featured every gadget from Geiger counters to circular saws (pictured right) and a James Bond Spy Watch produced in 1965 for kids included secret sliding lenses....

The Spaceman Watches of 1972-77
All obsessions have their own big bangs and appropriately enough, my own compulsive watch collecting began with the Spaceman watches of the '70s. Below is an article I wrote for QP Magazine reminiscing about going back to the future with these Spacemen. Leaving New York one chilly winter day, late in 1999, I found myself come unstuck in time and arrive in Basel at...

Sarpeneva Korona K3 Red Moon
One of Finland's most exclusive mechanical watchmaking companies, Sarpaneva, recently introduced the Korona K3 Red Moon. Featuring a red-hued moon phase indicator—reminiscent of the Harvest Moon typically seen in Europe this time of year—it's a fitting watch to be released just in time for Halloween. Different than the Sarpaneva models currently available, this one features a black, DLC-treated case combined with an 18-carat red...

Horological Machine No. 3
I was lucky enough to be one of the first people in the world to see the latest from Maximilian Büsser & Friends last week. Max and Stephen Hallock of MB&F met me for breakfast at NYC's Brasserie to unveil the most amazing of their Horological Machines yet. I hate to use one word to describe the HM3 Sidewinder and Starcruiser but here it...
