Cool Hunting
Steve MacDonald aka Steve Mac aka ramblinworker is one of my favorite artists, so I wasn't surprised to hear that the band Modest Mouse had asked to use a piece of his artwork for a t-shirt design.
Steve asked his friend Matthew Davis, also an S.F.-based artist and skilled web designer, to join him in making shirts. Together the two created a top-selling Modest Mouse tour shirt as well as designs for Puma, DC Shoes and the Bicycle Film Festival, not to mention another Modest Mouse t-shirt.
Recently they decided to come out with a line of their own and Little Zero, a collaboration between MacDonald, Davis and another friend, Tim Clinton came to be. Moving into a realm of over-the-top t-shirt screening, the Summer 2008 line features five designs with up to eight different colors as well as a bold, front and back all-over print.
My favorites are the Alphabet Explosion and Skulls with Rainbow. You know what I’ll be wearing this summer. (Above right images courtesy of

Spring has sprung and summer is hot on its heels, and when I think summer I think t-shirts and when I think t-shirts nothing comes to mind quicker than those that are buttery soft and vintage-inspired, like those from our good buddies at Vintage Vantage. Choosing to do things right and develop their own t-shirt fabric from scratch, combining clever slogans and quirky graphics has...
by Kyle SmallOver at The Imaginary Foundation, the mysterious "Director" and others have been experimenting with t-shirt styles for a while now and the Sublimation series is a new process that makes for super detailed imagery. Using dye-sublimation, the tees can be highly decorative and imaginative; talk about wearing art to its fullest extreme. And what really makes these shirts unique is the fabric:...
With hand drawn animals depicted mid-roar, these new white-on-black tees by British fashion illustrator Jo Ratcliffe bring new meaning to the word "fierce." The slouchy styles with varying sleeve and hem lengths work as tunics and dresses too. Created in collaboration with Edun, 15% of the price of the limited edition shirts helps support War Child, a non-profit dedicated to aiding children affected by...
Just surpassing the two year mark, Elizabeth Spiridakis' infectious fashion blog White Lightning recently came out with her own item of clothing, a witty t-shirt tribute to Pavement, Sassy magazine and Biggie. (Click image for detail.) After U.K.-based art collective Borders and Frontiers tasked her with conceptualizing a twist on the classic tee, she came up with "Wheels of Steel" featuring two strategically-placed 7"...
The initial design in a series of intelligent shirts combining fashion with technology, Moondial's Sun Nº01, limited edition zebra print tee, takes full shape a sunlight-activated image. Heat hitting the shirt reveals a lavender zebra head, lending an interactive element to an otherwise static graphic. Headed up by Sabine Seymour—Parsons professor and author of the book Fashionable Technology—Moondial created the dynamic shirt in combination...
Offering a point of difference in the very overcrowded graphic tee market, Ivory Skies base all their shirts on rare ancient artwork. The London outfit prints the images on nicely fitting white tees, making for a line that co-founder and designer Carlo Salanitri describes as "a rare style representation of the mystical past blended with today’s indie street fashion." Making big inroads with the...
