Cool Hunting
Working full-time as an online editor and magazine writer, Melbourne-based Mark Gambino found himself the recipient of numerous after-work events. Finding little to converse about with drunken musicians and statuesque models, the 30-something photography enthusiast started snapping. The result is a candid look at the music festivals, fashion events and VIP parties taking place in Australia. CH recently caught up with Gambino to talk snaps, socials and scenes.
When did you start snapping?
In the year of our Lord, 2003, I was sent to London and Monte Carlo by a sporting magazine, where I took my own photos for the interviews I conducted there. I guess you could say I started then.
What’s your equipment?
I use a Canon 5D mk II dSLR, Canon 70-200mm f2.8 L series IS lens and a Canon 17-40mm f4L USM lens.
Do you find yourself followed around by scenesters hoping to get their pic in the paper?
At music festivals, yes. It's usually over-exuberant Gen-Yers.
Would you give up to your day job to work full-time as a photographer?
I love the elegancy of words as much as I love the immediacy of a photo. I don't know if I could ever make that choice.
