Cool Hunting
Famed street artist and respected illustrator Parra opens his first exhibition in Germany tomorrow, 27 August 2009, called "I like the tee shirt but I will get the painting." Presented by Arkitip, the Dutch image-maker's brightly colored typographic illustrations are showing at the Pool Gallery in Berlin, an achievement that comes in addition to Parra's work plastered on clothing, sneakers, record sleeves, flyers and streets worldwide. (See install shots and a mystery sculpture wrapped for delivery below.)
Full of the self-taught artist's distinctive hand-drawn look, often somewhat racy subject matter and unusual color combos, the exhibition runs in tandem with a corresponding Parra Pop Up at Wood Wood Berlin, named "I like the painting but I will get the tee shirt." As Parra makes clear, for those who can't dole out the big bucks for something framed, the shop offers more affordable works.

by Shawn Thomson A rare exhibition of famed photographers Pierre et Gilles opened in Berlin last month, comprising a total of 80 unique large-format works spanning over 30 years of collaboration and featuring images never before shown in public. In one word, fantastic! Pierre et Gilles (born 1950 and 1953, respectively) have been living and working together in Paris since 1976, influencing contemporary photography...
Ghostpatrol is an Australian artist currently working in Melbourne. He cut his teeth as a street stenciler, but has since branched out into painting, sculpture and various other media. His most recent work includes drawings on a canvas of pencils. Arranged side-by-side, the pencils' surface were shaved into a flat plane making it easier to draw on. His works feature cherubic kids with oversized...
The work of Tom Schmelzer is unequivocally conceptual, but the actual concept is often left up for debate. His previous work has dealt explicitly with American culture, including their Commander in Chief, but his upcoming solo exhibition, "More Meat on the Bone," subsists on veiled references. Take the installation "Caught in the Line" (pictured), which incorporates three Australian parrots, three bird cages, tank targets...
“Mayoi Michi” is a solo exhibit for Audrey Kawasaki that opened over the weekend and runs through next month at the Copro Nason Gallery in Santa Monica, California. The exhibition will highlight a new collection of Audrey's ethereal oil on wood paintings, along with a series of rare giclee prints on archival paper. (Click images for detail.) Previously noted on Cool Hunting in December...
Pete Fowler's world is full of noisy guitars, big hair and cute monsters, all seen through very brightly-colored lenses. We've mentioned the cult graphic artist's work before with toys such as Action Man and his Be@rbrick, but his idiosyncratic style comes through to no better effect than in the new exhibition of paintings that opens today in London at the Stolen Space gallery. The...
For their premiere show, the new Bongoût Gallery in Berlin presents a show of '80s movie posters from Ghana opening tonight, Wednesday, 6 February 2008. Painted in oil on potato sacks, the paintings feature fantastic renderings of popular films which were shown in public screenings in homes, schools, social clubs and outdoors. Often the work of artists that may have not actually seen the...
