Freestyle Magazine
(21 October 2009) - I discovered the unusually frisbee-shaped Freestyle Magazine in my favorite bookshop, Athenaeum Boekhandel, on a recent trip to Amsterdam. Focused on fashion, design, art, architecture, lifestyle and frisbees, Berlin-based fashion photographer Jason McGlade created Freestyle for those who share his uninhibited spirit. In a world of rectangular publications, not only does Freestyle Magazine's circular shape set it apart, but so does its package design....

Minibar
(15 May 2009) - by Laura Neilson Most of us associate the term "mini-bar" with hotel room fridges harboring overpriced soft drinks, booze and snacks, but in Amsterdam, it's a decidedly unusual addition to the city's nightlife. Minibar, the recently-opened drinking spot in the Dutch city's center, operates by allowing customers to serve themselves from the bar's series of variously-sized beverage coolers. After checking in with a staff member...

Bas Louter: Dust (Asphault)
(24 February 2009) - Currently on display at the Ambach & Rice gallery in Seattle's artsy neighborhood of Ballard is a collection of works from Amsterdam-based artist Bas Louter. Louter uses ink and charcoal to create a chiaroscuro effect for his works, which conflate historical characteristics and imagined futures to suggest an adventure into an unknown destination—explaining the latter portion of the exhibition's title. The initial word, Dust,...

DesignKAAS Cheese
(16 February 2009) - by Laura NeilsonI came across Marinde van Leeuwen's playfully decorated wheels of baby gouda during a recent trip to Amsterdam, and now I'm kicking myself for not sneaking some back to The States with me. Produced by DesignKAAS, even the most turophobic person would appreciate one of these artful creations. The 5.5-inch wheels, described on company's site as "good Dutch farmers cheese in a nice...

Advanced Beauty: Synesthetic Film Exhibit
(05 August 2008) - by Kyle Small In collaboration with Amsterdam's newly opened Maxalot gallery, the exhibit of video art called Advanced Beauty, will — put simply — blow your mind. With a multinational cast including 18 different artists, this ongoing project focuses on the combination of sound and video and how the two interact. Based on the theory of color synesthesia (the scientific belief that certain individuals will...

Funky Forest
(07 December 2007) - Funky Forest is a digital interactive ecosystem created by visual and motion graphics designer Emily Gobeille and interactive artist and designer Theodore Watson. Created for the Cinekid Festival in Amsterdam, the installation is a simulated experience where visitors manage the resources to influence the environment around you. By diverting streams of water flowing on the floor different parts of the forest grow. If a...

Wolf and Pack
(01 June 2007) - Amsterdam based Wolf and Pack believe that the t-shirt is an instrument to incorporate art into everyday life. Born from two veterans of the street scene, Julian Lynn (New York) and Gabriel Hunter (Philadelphia), their T-shirts blend hard-edged design with a playful take on life. Made in limited quantities, I really like the gun/skull graphic (above left). Take a look at the rest of...

Ryan McGinness in Europe
(12 October 2006) - Master of silhouetted graphics (and perhaps the hardest working man in the art world) Ryan McGinness currently has a series of three solo shows called “NEVERODDOREVEN,” which are taking place across Western Europe this fall. At Curti/Gambuzzi in Milan the installation is in full swing and will be up through 3 November 2006 (pictured right, photos courtesy of Paolo Curti & Annamaria Gambuzzi &...

Aiko Trittico
(13 February 2006) - I'm glad to see that it looks like Niko Stumpo, the founder of Hanazuki. The shop not only sells self produced products from Aiko, but also other friends and acquaintances who practice the same method of production. Featured above are three friends known as Trittico. There's something slightly insidious about red penguins with beady eyes. ...

hoLAnda 2005
(02 December 2005) - It might seem like the current focus of everyone's attention is on Art Basel, but across the Atlantic, the second bi-annual exhibition of Latin American design, hoLAnda, runs through 4 December in Amsterdam. Held in the restored Posthoorn church and organized by the Amsterdam-based Latin American Design Foundation the main event includes premiere designers like Mexico-based Bala Studio's Jetson-esque funerary urn (pictured, above right)...

Shoebaloo Shop
(24 August 2005) - Heading to Amsterdam? Got a shoe fetish? Perhaps even with an inclination towards the extraterrestrial? Well, then check out the Shoebaloo store located at PC Hooftstraat 80. The interior of this designer footwear boutique was created by Meyer En Van Schooten. It's scifi interior not only looks the part, but also functions as such as well. The shop entrance is hidden behind mirrored doors...
