Brad Downey: An Honest Thief
(30 January 2009) - Growing up as a member of an itinerant United States Marine Corps family, Brad Downey quickly became acquainted with the 20th century urban landscape. His latest exhibition, "An Honest Thief," is tangible evidence of his keen understanding of urban architecture and what it signifies. By manipulating road signs and other urban symbols, like phone booths, the Berlin-based artist reminds us that these signals and...

FTW-Crew: Berlin Photoshop Graffiti
(15 January 2009) - Writers from the FTW-Crew (Mr. Tailon, Baveux Prod., Kone and Epoxy) were recently spotted altering posters of Britney Spears, Leona Lewis, and Christina Aguilera in the Berlin metro. In a clever form of adbusting, they superimposed the Photoshop steps it takes to make the ladies look so picture perfect, both a lesson in design and a gentle reminder of our urban airbrushed landscape. ...

Jaybo aka Monk: Paint My House
(09 September 2008) - Taking on Berlin's largest cathedral, the Berliner Dom, street artist Jaybo recently transformed the facade with a sea of cartoon hands. The sketch (above) looks like Disney and Hokusai collaborated on the piece, but the luminous realization of it (thanks to the high-powered projectors of Skudi Optix) takes the concept a step further. Contact Tristesse Deluxe for more info on the project and check...

Tom Schmelzer: More Meat on the Bone
(21 March 2008) - The work of Tom Schmelzer is unequivocally conceptual, but the actual concept is often left up for debate. His previous work has dealt explicitly with American culture, including their Commander in Chief, but his upcoming solo exhibition, "More Meat on the Bone," subsists on veiled references. Take the installation "Caught in the Line" (pictured), which incorporates three Australian parrots, three bird cages, tank targets...

Showcasing a myriad of colorful works of art, it's an inventive (and attractive) way to look at both the environment and contemporary motoring. Dense Records
(06 February 2008) - One of the best record stores I've visited in recent times is the centrally located music store, Dense, in Berlin. Their selection is impeccable, their staff friendly and they know their music. I've visited my share of music stores around the world—including Ameoba in L.A., Tower in Tokyo, Kim's in New York, and the recently dissolved Smallfish in London—and I have to say Dense...

Modeselektor
(01 February 2008) - Long the de facto home of techno music, it's no surprise that Berlin is bursting at the seams with electronic music. But it is a rare feat when one of these artists transcends the club scene like Modeselektor. A staple of the German capital's underground party circuit dating back to the mid-'90s, the group produces a genre-straddling brand of glitchy beats that are equal...

Steven Harrington
(11 January 2008) - Since we first heard about L.A.-based artist and designer Steven Harrington's work, he's apparently been busy. Some of his latest illustration recently reached my desk in the form of a beautiful holiday calendar from Daub and Bauble. Created at the Studio on Fire letterpress, Harrington's design features a proud peacock with Day of the Dead-style skulls. (Pictured above right.)Harrington, along with fellow artist Justin...

Windmove
(23 October 2007) - As wind power gains popularity, the synchronized movements of windmills dotting large expanses are a pretty awe-inspiring sight. Artist Christoph Ernst takes the visual display a step further by installing colored LEDs in the wind turbine blades. The innovative public art project he calls Windmove began last night, 22 October, and will light up fields outside of Berlin through the end of the year,...

Berlin Observed: Ping Pong, Organics and Lebensmittel
(26 June 2007) - While Berlin's heyday as the avant-capitol of Europe has been in decline, I recently noticed a few Berliner habits that show the city still has an edge—even if it is a softer, more grown-up one. Ping Pong tables are everywhere, in public parks, bars and even in the garden of my friend’s apartment. It's not uncommon for players to carry their own paddles and balls...

Anuschka Hoevener
