Choccywoccydoodah Chocolatier
(08 January 2009) - On a recent trip to London we felt the beach calling and headed south to Brighton, where we discovered Choccywoccydoodah. Meandering the streets of the seaside town, we came upon a shop with strange sculptures in the window and it took a minute to sort out that the shining Victorian skull wasn't in fact made of porcelain, it was 100% Belgian chocolate.Known as the couturiers...

Chuao Firecracker Chocolates
(04 December 2008) - We love a good high-brow low-brow mash up, and that's exactly what Chuao's new Firecracker chocolates provide—a combination of very tasty chocolate, a little salt, the heat of chipotle and the pop of crackling candy. We were surprised how much we liked it. While they offer a small variety of firecracker chocolate bars, we particularly enjoyed the chocolate truffles, which delivered, as someone said, "a...

Jason Kronenwald: A Fresh Pack of Gum Blondes
(10 June 2008) - Jason Kronenwald, an MFA graduate from Queens University in Kingston, Ontario, made one of his first bubblegum artworks called Gum Blondes in 1996. In the last decade he has flirted extensively with these blondes, refining his craft and technique to such remarkable degree that the notion these portraits are made from bubblegum seems preposterous. But gum they are. Comprised solely of chewed gum (all...

Papabubble
(14 January 2008) - We recently came across the Papabubble range of sweetened goodies and who would've thought that lollies—and hard ones at that—could be made to look so creative. And delicious. It's the twists on conventional lolly types that make the Barcelona-based company so worth checking out. We spoke to founder Tommy Tang about the rise of Papabubble from Australian upstarts to international favorites, "Crick, my delicious...

Eight Salty, Sweet, Mouth-Puckering Licorices
(21 December 2007) - by Karen McGrane Licorice seemed wrong and bad to me as a child, one of those things like coffee ice cream or kissing in movies that made me deeply suspicious of adult desires. As my tastes have matured so has my preference for licorice and I seek out only the darkest, chewiest, and most complex flavors. Used as a sweetener and a medicinal since ancient...

Chewing Gum For Men
(15 June 2007) - Guys and gals are different. In Japan, that means one thing: separate junk food. Osaka-based confectionary Glico paved the way years back when it introduced its popular chocolate and biscuit snack "Pocky" in male-geared bitter chocolate. The name of this groundbreaking product? "Men's Pocky." So clever. Now that we've got chocolate snacks covered, next up is chewing gum. Last fall, Kanebo Foods introduced Otoko...

Monster Memos
(15 August 2006) - Culinary renegade Homaro Cantu maybe refining the art of edible paper with his cheesecake and mojito flavored ink-jet creations at Chicago's Moto restaurant, but German confectioner Hoch Fun-Food is making it accessible to the cubicle-confined. Available in tutti-frutti, raspberry, and orange, the flavors may be more mundane than Cantu's, but each 12-pack of Monster Memos comes complete with a food coloring ink pen for...

Sticky Personalized Candy
(10 February 2005) - Sydney based Sticky are candy artisans and performers. They make all sorts of hard candies in their shop, while open for business, for all their customers to see first hand. Their attention to detail is pretty amazing; I can only assume the candy tastes great, too. The best thing is that they will accommodate custom orders-- specify colors, flavors, shapes, pictures and even text....
