(02 March 2006) - Given Brian Eno’s dabbling in nearly every popular music form in the last 35 years, from nob-twirling glam pioneer to producing some of the best albums to come out of post punk and new wave (not to mention his own role as a forefather to electronic and ambient music) it’s not really a surprise he chose to experiment with another electronic medium—video. In 1981...

Ryan Trecartin: "A Family Finds Entertainment"
(27 February 2006) - Judging by 24-year-old artist Ryan Trecartin's infectious, semi-hallucinogenic debut, "A Family Finds Entertainment," reports of video art's demise have been greatly exaggerated. With nods to Jack Smith and very early John Waters, the 40 minute piece—packed with refreshingly raw computer graphics and a manic soundtrack—loosely follows the story of an unstable gay boy who comes out to his parents, gets hit by a car...

(23 February 2006) - On 5 December 2005, a day now known as “Black Monday” in the surfboard industry, the major manufacturer of the foam “blanks” that form the board's core, Clark Foam, shut its doors, ending an almost 44 year monopoly on the market. No one knows exactly why owner Grubby Clark ceased production (he cites increasing regulations and pressure from the EPA, who denied the claims),...

Newsmap
(30 March 2004) - Marcos Weskamp has completed his most recent project, Newsmap-- the most impressive news headline visualization software I have ever seen. Many designers have attempted to create new formats for communicating recency, relevance and volume for news headlines, and the results have often been pretty.
